TekLan VPN won’t connect: what to try

Most connection problems come from the network you are on, another VPN on the same device, or a permission the device is still waiting for. Work through these checks in order; most people are connected again by the third.

Short answer: Check the internet works with the VPN off, then try another location, then switch protocol to OpenVPN. Close any other VPN app, approve the device’s VPN permission, and sign out and back in. Still stuck? Open a support ticket with the location and time.
Checklist

Work through these in order

  1. Check the internet without the VPN. Disconnect and open a website. If nothing loads, the problem is the network itself.
  2. Try another location. A single server may be busy or under maintenance; another city usually connects straight away.
  3. Switch protocol. In VPN settings › Protocol (VPN protocol on Android), try OpenVPN, which gets through networks that block WireGuard. Which protocol should I use?
  4. Update the app. The setup guides link to the latest version for every device.
  5. Close other VPNs and filters. Most devices allow one VPN at a time. Disconnect or uninstall other VPN, DNS-changing and ad-blocking apps, which can block ours.
  6. Restart the device, then try again.
  7. Approve the VPN permission. The first connection asks the device to allow a VPN. If you dismissed it, connect again and approve it.
  8. Check the date and time. Secure connections fail when the device clock is wrong. Set it to update automatically.
  9. Sign out and back in. This refreshes your account and the list of locations.
  10. Using a manual profile? In the Dashboard, create a fresh WireGuard or OpenVPN profile and import it again.
Networks that block VPNs

Hotels, offices, schools and some mobile networks

Some networks only allow ordinary web traffic. On those, WireGuard may never connect while OpenVPN over TCP does: in the iPhone, iPad and Mac apps from 4.4.0 it uses port 443, the same as secure websites. If a hotel or café Wi-Fi has a sign-in page, finish that first with the VPN off, then connect.

Questions

Frequently asked

It connects but websites do not load. What now?

Try another location, then switch protocol. If you changed the DNS setting in the app, set it back to TekLan DNS and reconnect.

It worked yesterday. What changed?

Usually the network: a new Wi-Fi, a hotel sign-in page or a mobile network that blocks VPN traffic. Try the checklist from the top.

Do I need to reinstall the app?

Rarely. Signing out and back in, or switching location and protocol, fixes most problems without reinstalling.
