Shared IP or dedicated IP: which do I need?
When you connect, the sites you visit see the VPN server’s IP address instead of yours. With a standard plan that address is shared with other TekLan customers. A dedicated IP is an address used by you alone.
How they compare
Shared IP
Included with every plan. Many people use the same address, so a site cannot tell which of them you are. A few sites block or question shared VPN addresses.
Dedicated IP
An add-on to a plan. The address is yours alone and the same every time, so allow-lists work and CAPTCHAs are rarer. Sites can tell it is the same user each time.
Pick by what you need to reach
Everyday browsing and streaming
A shared IP. It gives the most privacy for normal use.
A work system that allow-lists your address
A dedicated IP, so your employer can allow one address.
A bank that keeps blocking the VPN
Try Bypass first; a dedicated IP is the fix if you want that site on the VPN too.
Endless CAPTCHAs
A dedicated IP, since the address carries no one else’s history.
What changes with your own address
- Because the address is yours alone, abuse reports about it come to your account.
- TekLan still keeps no logs of what you do.
- In the apps, a dedicated IP appears first, under Your private servers, with its address.
- If you cancel, the address is retired for 30 days before anyone else can have it.
Frequently asked
Is a dedicated IP less private?
It is less anonymous, because sites can recognise the same address each time. Your traffic is just as encrypted.
Can I still use the other locations?
Yes. The dedicated IP is an extra location; your plan’s shared locations stay available.
Is a dedicated IP the same as a private server?
No. A dedicated IP is your own address on TekLan’s servers. A private server is a whole VPN server set up for you.
