Wi-Fi calling, CarPlay and AirPlay with a VPN
A VPN that protects the whole device sends everything through the tunnel, including things that should stay at home: calls to your mobile network, your car, your TV and your printer. TekLan VPN keeps those working.
Some traffic is meant to stay local
Wi-Fi calling talks to your mobile network, CarPlay and AirPlay talk to devices next to you, and printers and TVs live on your home network. If that traffic is sent to a VPN server instead, calls may not connect, your car or TV may not appear, and the printer may vanish.
Accessories stay off the VPN, everything else stays on it
Accessories keep working
On iPhone and iPad (4.4.0, iOS 17.4 or later): CarPlay, AirPlay, notifications and Wi-Fi calling stay outside the VPN automatically while your Bypass list is empty.
Local network access
On iPhone, iPad, Mac, Android, Windows and Apple TV: one switch in VPN settings lets your device reach printers, casting and file shares while connected.
The rest stays protected
Your browsing and apps still go through the VPN; only the local and carrier traffic is left out.

Quick checks
- Update the app, then disconnect and reconnect so the new settings apply.
- Check that Local network access is on in VPN settings.
- On iPhone or iPad, using Bypass? The automatic accessory exclusion is off while Bypass has entries; turn on Local network access instead.
- Switch the VPN off for a moment: if the device still does not work, the problem is elsewhere.
- Still stuck? Open a support ticket with your device, app version and what you were trying to use.
Frequently asked
Is my Wi-Fi call protected?
Wi-Fi calls go to your mobile network over its own encrypted connection, so they stay protected without the VPN.
Does local network access expose my device?
It lets your device reach your own home or office network while connected. Your internet traffic still goes through the VPN.
Does Android Auto work with the VPN on?
Yes. Android Auto keeps working while TekLan VPN is connected.
